Probing foamy spacetime with Variational Methods
A one-loop correction of the quasilocal energy in the Schwarzschild background, with flat space as a reference metric, is performed by means of a variational procedure in the Hamiltonian framework. We examine the graviton sector in momentum space, in the lowest possible state. An application to the black hole pair creation via the Casimir energy is presented. Implications on the foam-like scena...
متن کاملProbing Gravity with Spacetime Sirens
A gravitational observatory such as LISA will detect coalescing pairs of massive black holes, accurately measure their luminosity distance and help identify a host galaxy or an electromagnetic counterpart. If dark energy is a manifestation of modified gravity on large scales, gravitational waves from cosmologicallydistant spacetime sirens are direct probes of this new physics. For example, a gr...
متن کاملProbing Vacuum with Variational Methods in Quantum Gravity
We use variational methods to calculate quasilocal energy quantum corrections. A comparison with the effective potential calculated at quadratic order is made by means of gaussian wave functionals. The method is a particular case of the effective action for composite operators used in quantum field theory. In pure gravity the method is applied for the first time. Implications on the foam-like s...
متن کاملCasimir energy and variational methods in AdS spacetime
Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, we calculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter and the Anti-de Sitter space energy difference. By computing the one loop approximation for TT tensors we discover the existence of an unstable mode at zero temperature, which can be stabilized by the boundary reduction method. Implications on a foam-like spac...
متن کاملProbing non-Riemannian spacetime geometry
The equations of motion for matter in non-Riemannian spacetimes are derived via a multipole method. It is found that only test bodies with microstructure couple to the non-Riemannian spacetime geometry. Consequently it is impossible to detect spacetime torsion with the satellite experiment Gravity Probe B, contrary to some recent claims in the literature.
